VS Athletics Track Club won the women's competition with 133 points, 29 of which were earned by its four women hammer throwers. If the hammer squad of Haapanen, Kraychir, Kraychir, and Genisauski were a team in the competition, they would have taken third overall.

Kraychir Makes it Three in a Row

Mesa, Arizona - Casey Kraychir, junior at Twentynine Palms High School, set a high school girls junior class hammer record with a throw of 190'3" at the USATF Arizona Track and Field Championship, which was held at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona today.  Kraychir's mark of 190'03" narrowly nudged out Maureen Griffin's 1997 record performance of 190'.

Yet, in spite of an easily perceived outward appearance, Kraychir had actually made several courageous, but failed, efforts to earn the record.  Her first throw of the day measured 182'8", which broke her previous best of 180'4".  Her second throw of 187'5" set another personal best, but missed the national record by some 29 inches, thereby fueling her drive to break the golden 190-foot mark.

Energized by her second attempt, Kraychir gambled her third throw, which resulted in her worse throw of the day, 178'10".  Now feeling a sense of urgency, she than bettered her personal best for a third time with a mammoth throw of 188'7", still some 17 inches shy of her 190' goal.

On Kraychir's fifth throw, she again bettered her best for a new national record throw of 190'3", which broke the 12-year-old record of 190' by Maureen Griffin.  And with one last throw, the high school junior gambled a 186'11" mark to end the day's competition.

When asked about her big throw of the day and her dramatic turn around from previous seasonal throws that were just shy of her incredible sophomore record throw of 180'4", she said, "I am now getting underneath the ball and am much more patient than I have been since last year.  My strength gains have helped, but because I was standing too tall during the throw, I could not handle the momentum when it came time to release the ball."

Kraychir's 190'3" record throw made it three in a row for the high school throwing prodigy; she now holds the high school girl's freshman, sophomore, and junior hammer records of 173'4", 180'4", and 190'3" respectively.

And Kraychir's younger sister, high school sophomore hammer thrower Katie Kraychir, also performed a personal best with a throw of 174'7", which ranks her fourth nationally, while Casey is now ranked second nationally.

Kraychir Girls Throw Seasonal Best

Mesa, Arizona – High School junior Casey and sophomore Katie Kraychir threw 174'10" and 171'5" respectively at the Arizona Flames Invitational today.  Both distances are seasonal best throws and sets a foundation for further improvements in the weeks ahead.

Casey Kraychir had a personal best of 180'4" toward the end of her sophomore season, which established a national sophomore girls hammer record, but was consistent in the low 170' foot range.

On the other hand, Katie Kraychir has thrown at or near her personal best from last year three times this season, which she believes is setting a base for even bigger throws in the weeks ahead.  Katie threw in the mid 160' range last year and had a personal best of 171'1".
